When Levern Spencer represented St. Lucia at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil, she joined Dominic Johnson in having the most representations for her country at this prestigious event, three (3). No other St. Lucian has been to the Olympics more once at the Olympics. She enhanced her representation at the Rio, Olympics when she made it to the finals, thereby creating history by becoming the first St. Lucian to do so, and went a step further by placing a commendable 6th in the finals behind athletes from Spain, Bulgaria, Croatia, United States and Italy. At present, this star athlete is preparing to represent St. Lucia at her fourth (4th) Olympics which will be held in Tokyo, Japan between July and August 2021. This will give her the sole most representations for her country at this global event.

Since breaking her St. Lucia’s national high jump record in 1998, Levern  Spencer has represented her country with distinction locally, regionally and internationally for over 2 decades and counting.  During this lengthy career she has accumulated a phenomenal record of achievements for St Lucia, including being the first (and mainly the only) St Lucian to accomplish many sporting feats such as:

• qualify and medal at the World Youth Championships – winning the bronze medal in 2001
• win gold medals at the Pan American Games, achieving this twice, in Toronto, Canada in 2015 and in LIma, Peru in 2019 qualify for and medalled at the Continental Cup where she represented the Americas
• competed and medalled at the prestigious annual Diamond League Athletics professional competitions over the past 11 years
• qualify for the World Indoor Athletics Championships – having done so for the past 7 championships
• qualify for and medalled at the Commonwealth Games (all 5 Games between 2002 and 2018 and being St. Lucia’s flag bearer for all 5) – medalling on 3 occasions including a historic gold in Australia in 2018
• qualify for the World Athletics Championships, which she has done for the past 8 consecutive championships
• qualify for the finals of the Olympic Games – qualifying for the last 3 consecutive Games (being the flag bearer for all 3), placing a commendable 6th in the finals in 2016.

Levern is currently the St. Lucian national national record holder ; Caricom national record holder; and North and Central America and Caribbean under 23 high jump record holder.  Unsurprisingly, she has won St. Lucia’s Sportswoman Of The Year title a record 16 times.
